Three for Today – #7 (The Upskirts, Carry Nation and Papa VS Pretty)

It’s not Tuesday, or Thursday but I’m waaaaay over due for an update so you get one today…on a Friday. As always, hope you enjoy the tunes.

                                                          The Upskirts – She Devil

Clocking in at just over 2 minutes with its mix of indie/garage/pop, She Devil will have you on your feet in seconds, only to leave you wanting more when it finishes. Responsible for this killer track is Sydney band, The Upskirts. Although young, the four friends from high school are definitely ones to keep an eye on as they begin to cement their place in the Australian music scene. She Devil is the first taste of the band’s debut EP which is to be released in the coming months. Check the Myspace for Sydney shows too!

                                                         Carry Nation – Phil Spector

Jessie Warren is Carry Nation. Originally based in Brisbane, Warren now resides in Melbourne. Song Phil Spector is a  new favourite of mine, with its arrangements and honest vocals that beautifully compliment one another, Warren invites you into her musical world and you don’t want to leave. Her debut album Like A River was released earlier this year and it’s already been added to my “to-buy” list. Carry Nation supports Scott Spark’s album launch at The Toff on September 30th come along! (also, watch this video – Carry Nation performs on a tram with friends Lisa Mitchell and Lanie Lane)

Papa VS Pretty – Heavy Harm

A Sydney band you may have heard of. Correction. Should have heard of. Three piece band, Papa VS Pretty have been kicking around the Sydney music scene for a few years, earning fans with both the band’s live shows and past releases. (Track Citizen No. 1 would have to be one of my favourites) Described as “folk-rock” Papa VS Pretty recently released a new EP produced by none other than Paul Dempsey (Something For Kate) Heavy Harm is the title track, and with such strong vocals from frontman Thomas Rawle, it hints at the potential they have. The band are signed to Peace & Riot, a label formed  by EMI and I predict this is just the beginning of big things for Papa VS Pretty. While in Sydney a few weekends ago, I went along to the EP launch at Spectrum and can confidently say the band are even better live than on record. Papa VS Pretty will be on tour with The Holidays soon. I suggest you go.
